Boat tour in the Mekong Delta!
I teamed up with a couple from London and Y took us out on his own boat for a 6 hour ride on the Mekong Delta. We began the tour about a kilometer from the homestay, where Y parks his boats. We were moving among the small canals of the Mekong, touching interesting places on the way. The Mekong Delta area is home for 14 million people. People live in some cities, villages and many of them live on the water in floating houses. Our first stop was an orchid farm. They grow them in shades, water them a lot and in order to keep the moisture they use coconut and rice fiber on the soil around the plants. At a honey bees farm we were tasting honey-pollen-tea, on a cacao farm we tasted fresh, and roasted cacao and of course interesting chocolates. We visited catfish ponds. They grow there for 9 months. At the beginning there is 20 tons of baby catfish in each pond. After the 9 months cycle they're all big and weight all together 400 tons. They're transported alive to the factory, where they're being filleted, and frozen for export. We were also listening to traditional Vietnamese music played by locals on a guitar and two other unidentified instruments. We gained an interesting view on the local life on water, including looking at private, family run fish ponds, attached to the floating houses of families.
