In a lot of restaurants the best way to pick your dish is just to look at their window and see what they offer. This is not unique to Japan, I saw it in Hong-Kong and in other places in the east. But it's still amazing how accurately they do it:
Look at the soup standing vertically without spilling out!
Another interesting phenomenon is the Horumonyaki (Japanese: ホルモン焼き). This is basically type of restaurants which serve internal organs of animals, mostly beef and pork. Horumonyaki has a reputation for being a "stamina building" food. It was even trade marked in Osaka in 1940. Hormone restaurant. This is exactly what humanity needs.
